If Kenya rewards a tighter itinerary, Tanzania rewards a longer one. The Serengeti Park Safari alone is close to five times the size of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, and it's one continuous ecosystem rather than a scatter of separate reserves, which changes the feel of a game drive considerably. There's a genuine sense of open wilderness here that's harder to find in Kenya's more compact parks, and depending on the season, you'll either catch the migration calving on the southern plains (January to March) or the herds pushing north toward the Kenyan border (June to July).

The Ngorongoro Crater is Tanzania's other must-see, and for a very practical reason: this collapsed volcanic caldera holds one of the highest wildlife densities anywhere in Africa within a single, contained bowl. The Maasai Mara is a shorter flight from Nairobi than most of Tanzania's northern circuit is from Arusha, and the park's compact size means less time spent driving between sightings.
