The 1 day Mount Longonot hiking safari is an exhilarating adventure that takes you to the summit of Mount Longonot, a dormant volcano located in the Great Rift Valley of Kenya. The hike is approximately 8 to 10 kilometres round trip and takes around 4 to 6 hours to complete, depending on your fitness level. The trek offers massive views of the surrounding landscape, including Lake Naivasha and the Kinangop plateau, as well as the opportunity to spot a variety of wildlife, like the buffaloes, gazelles and various bird species. The summit of Mount Longonot offers stunning 360° views, making it a perfect spot for photography and taking in the natural beauty of the African landscape.
On the day of this Kenya safari, you will be picked up from your hotel in Nairobi after an early morning breakfast; you will meet your safari guide/driver and set off northwestwards from Nairobi on a drive of 1-2 hours to Mount Longonot. Upon your arrival, you will register at the park’s headquarters for registration of hiking and then start your hiking from the gate, which lies at an elevation of 2150 metres, heading to the rim of the crater of the volcano at an elevation of 2776 metres above sea level.
The hike takes you through a very steep and craggy trail, which makes the hike a bit difficult and requires hikers to be physically fit. As you head towards the rim of the crater, you will take breaks to rest and refresh. Once at the rim of the crater, the pinnacle of this hike, you are rewarded with splendid sights of the Great Rift Valley and Lake Naivasha. From the rim of the crater, you will descend back to the main gate of Mount Longonot National Park, where the experience started.
From the gate, together with your safari driver, you will set off on your driver’s back to Nairobi. In Nairobi, you will be dropped off either at your lodge or at the airport for your departure flight.
