Day 1: Kampala to Kibale National Park
Your English-speaking driver-guide collects you from your Kampala hotel and provides a comprehensive briefing on the journey and activities ahead before departure. The journey to Kibale Forest National Park, which will take five to six hours, will pass through the towns of Mityana and Mubende and will clearly demonstrate the changing scenery from the Central Highlands of Uganda to its green and wooded western side.
Arriving at the park in time for a relaxed lunch at the lodge, the afternoon begins with the opportunity to rest and settle in before heading out for the evening’s activity.
Afternoon Nature Walk at Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary
The late afternoon is devoted to a guided nature walk at Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-managed conservation area just outside the park boundary that is one of western Uganda’s most rewarding and most accessible wildlife experiences. The walk winds through papyrus swamp, riverine forest, and woodland habitats where a remarkable diversity of species can be observed at close range and a genuinely unhurried pace.
Primate sightings are a consistent highlight of the Bigodi walk. The L’Hoest monkey, the black-and-white colobus, the red colobus monkey, the vervet monkey, and the grey-cheeked mangabey are some examples of primates that one might encounter on such tours. Sandwiches can be collected from the lodge and taken to the Kanyanchu tourism centre for a briefing session.
Morning Briefing
The Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger guides conduct a thorough pre-trek briefing covering the rules and safety guidelines for chimpanzee tracking, maintaining a minimum distance of eight metres from the animals, keeping voices low, following the ranger’s instructions at all times, and understanding the importance of these protocols both for tourist safety and for the long-term well-being of the chimpanzee community. The briefing also provides background on the specific habituated community that will be tracked, giving tourists a meaningful context for the encounter ahead.
Into the Forest
From Kanyanchu, the group enters Kibale’s forest on foot with experienced ranger guides who track the chimpanzee community using their intimate knowledge of the animals’ daily ranging patterns and the acoustic cues, calls, drumming on tree buttresses, and movement sounds that betray the group’s location through the dense canopy. The trek can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on where the chimpanzees have ranged that morning, and the forest walk itself is rich with incidental wildlife, other primate species, notable bird calls, impressive tree species, and the general atmospheric quality of one of East Africa’s finest tropical forests.
The One-Hour Encounter
When the chimpanzee community is located, the group settles into quiet observation for the permitted one hour in their presence.
