Akagera National Park

Rwanda has just one savannah park, which is Akagera National Park and covers an area of over 1100 square kilometres in the eastern region of the country towards the Tanzanian border. The park is a paradise of sweeps of savannah plain, hills and rolling lakes, just a 2.5 to 3-hour drive from Kigali.

As compared to the other parks in Rwanda that are rich in mountain gorillas and chimpanzees, Akagera is a place where visitors can see the Big Five of Africa, which include lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino, among other animals such as giraffes, zebras, hippos and crocodiles, not to mention over 500 species of birds. It is among the most distinct safari spots in East Africa because of its diverse ecosystems, malaria-free environment and a stunning conservation success story.

Wildlife and Safari Experience.

Akagera is the best place to have a classic game drive in Rwanda. Drives in the morning, afternoons and the entire day through the long plains of the park will pay off with views of the elephants, which can be found grazing on acacia trees, lions that hunt the antelope, and giraffes that grace the savannah. With the aid of a collaboration between African Parks and the Rwandan government, Akagera has been restored successfully after many years of poaching and encroachment. It has a healthy population of reintroduced rhinos and lions nowadays, and is one of the few Big Five safari parks in the area.

To enhance the experience, boat safaris on Lake Ihema give the visitor a special treat to see pods of hippos, crocodiles basking and water birds like fish eagles, herons and the rare shoebill stork. One can also take night drives that provide an opportunity to view nocturnal animals such as civets, bush babies, and hyenas.

Transportability: The methods of reaching Akagera National Park.

The park is 110 kilometres out of Kigali, which can be approached through the southern gate at Kiyonza. It is quite an easy reach as most of its journey to the capital is on tarmac roads. A stretch towards the entrance, however, is gravel, which is subject to the season. In the dry seasons (June- September and December-February), a two-wheel-drive car will be able to cope with the path; however, during the wet seasons (rainy), four-wheel drive would be highly advised as the paths are muddy and slippery.

Budget travellers can take public transport to get there, but this will require some flexibility. Buses operate between Kigali and Rwumagana or Kayonza, where visitors can board shared taxis or motorcycle taxis (moto) to reach the town of Rwinkwavu, only 15 minutes by road to the park gate. To explore inside Akagera, there is a need to hire a guide or park vehicle.

Do You Need a 4×4 for Akagera?

Although one can access the park entrance using a normal car, it is different in the internal game tracks. The northern part of Akagera has rough dirt roads in which a 4×4 is virtually indispensable. The increased clearance and stability of a 4×4 is an advantage to self-drive safari enthusiasts, particularly following a rainfall.

Tour operators usually offer 4×4 safari vehicles to operate on a guided tour to provide comfort and safety. Visitors who remain in the park can also plan guided drives with professional rangers at Magashi Camp, Akagera Game Lodge or other lodges.

When is the Best Time to Visit Akagera National Park?

Akagera can be visited all year long, although the animal viewing is best in the dry seasons (June to September and December to February). The months are filled with animals clustering around lakes and rivers, trees are thinner, and roads are easier to access.

Wet seasons (March to May and October to November) turn the park into a green paradise with fewer crowds, and therefore the best place to visit during a birdwatching and photography adventure, although some of the tracks are challenging without a 4×4.

There are other activities, such as a Safari, that can be done in place of game drives.

Akagera has many experiences other than the standard game drives. Guided walks on foot with armed rangers enable the visitor to walk the savannah on foot, learning about small animals, plants and methods of tracking. Travellers go to Lake Shakani to go fishing in this area as an activity that allows them to enjoy a more relaxed trip to the area and to learn about the Rwanda community and conservation work.

To people who are visiting more than one destination, Akagera safaris can be integrated with gorilla tracking in Volcanoes National Park or chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest and leave the travellers with a full Rwandan wildlife tour. It is also easy to take cross-border safaris to Uganda, where Queen Elizabeth National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park are easily reachable.

Community Impact and Conservation.

The recovery of Akagera is considered one of the most glorified conservation success stories in Africa. The park, which was once endangered by overgrazing and poaching, has been rebuilt by means of vigorous anti-poaching campaigns, involvement of the community, and reintroduction of wildlife.

Local communities are supported by the revenue of entry fees and tourism in the parks, and they are managed sustainably. Going to Akagera is not only a way to see wildlife but also to take part in the larger conservation cause of Rwanda.

Practical Travel Tips

  • Reserve your permits and guides beforehand, and more so during high seasons.
  • Bring small amounts of Rwandan Francs to cover small things such as moto taxis and tips.
  • Assuming that you are self-driving, make sure that your rental car is well insured and off-road.
  • One should never go into the park without a registered park guide; they make the experience worthwhile and provide safety.

Prepare necessities such as binoculars, water, snacks, sunscreen, and a power bank to drive long distances within the park.

Conclusion: What To See in Akagera National Park.

Akagera National Park is the most recommended place in Rwanda where one can enjoy the typical African safari.
