Arusha National Park

Arusha National Park is a wildlife park within the country that is one of the most diverse and accessible in the country, and lies in the north of Tanzania. The park is located at the base of the second-highest mountain in Tanzania, which is referred to as Mount Meru, and it is located within a close distance to the busy city of Arusha, covering an area of about 1,694 square kilometres. The Arusha National Park is characterised by dramatic scenery. The topography of the park is a mixture of rolling savannah plain, the rich montane forests, volcanic craters and the Ngurdoto Crater, which is commonly known as the Little Serengeti. The imposing snow-capped mountain of Mount Meru is a stratovolcano, making the skyline of the park, because its peak is 4,562 meters (14,968 feet). It is the tallest mountain among the neighbouring mountains of Kilimanjaro and offers a spectacular view of the park and adding to the richness of biodiversity in the park.

The Momella Lakes are also found within the park; they are a chain of alkaline lakes scattered on the plains. The lakes are also known to host the flamingos, which are known to gather in large numbers, giving a beautiful pink reflection on the surface of the water. The habitat formed by the combination of mountain, crater, and lake ecosystems is a special mosaic of habitats which harbour a large number of species, including aquatic birds as well as savannah grazers and forest-dwelling species.

Wildlife in Arusha National Park.

Arusha National Park has a large number of wildlife, even though it is small. Elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, waterbucks, blue monkeys, olive baboons and Vervet monkeys are also found in the park, and it provides a classic Tanzanian safari to the visitors. There are Leopards and lions, which are hard to see, and this makes them hard to find during game drives.

The colobus monkeys and especially the black-and-white colobus are one of the attractions of the park as they live in the thick forests on the slope of Mount Meru. The apes are fun-loving, and they can be observed swinging around trees, which brings joy to the tourists walking in the forest.

The Momella Lakes provide a nesting area to the birds, each having more than 400 species of birds, such as greater and lesser flamingos, pelicans, storks, cormorants, and Egyptian geese. The diversity and accessibility of the different species will be exciting to the birdwatchers who visit the park, and the alkaline lakes will offer the visitors excellent photographic backgrounds of the mountain Meru.

The hike compensates the hikers with scenic views of the park, its surrounding plains and when the weather is clear, a distant sight of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Mountain climbers will be able to spot forest elephants, colobus monkeys, and other bird species on the mountain ascent. Mount Meru is an exhilarating adventure experience for all nature lovers and trekking junkies because of the physical difficulty, the picturesque nature, and the wildlife experience.

Crater Landscapes

The volcano craters found in Arusha National Park are remarkable and provide the park with dramatic scenery and ecological diversity. Ngurdoto Crater is a huge forested caldera commonly referred to as Little Serengeti as a result of its open grasslands, which are encircled by forested cliffs. Buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, warthogs, and elephants can be found in the crater, and thus, it is a good place to do game drives. The crater rim walk offers a beautiful view of the wildlife and the mountains.

The other crater is Momella Crater, which is a series of lakes where thousands of flamingos and other water birds can be found. Different species of birds are attracted by the alkaline water and rich mineral environment; therefore, this location is especially attractive to photographers and bird lovers.
