Tanzania National Parks
Top Safari Destinations in Tanzania
Tanzania’s safari destinations span open plains, volcanic craters, riverine wilderness and mountain forests, enough variety that most travellers won’t see it all in one trip. This guide covers the country’s core safari parks, plus the beach and mountain extensions that round out a Tanzania safari itinerary.
Quick answer: Tanzania’s main safari destinations include Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ruaha, Nyerere, Mikumi and Gombe Stream. The northern circuit is a common starting point for first-time Tanzania safaris, while southern and western Tanzania offer quieter wildlife and primate experiences.
Safari Destinations
Serengeti National Park
Tanzania’s flagship safari destination and the centrepiece of most northern circuit itineraries. Its vast plains support large populations of lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, zebras and wildebeest, and the park is central to the annual Great Migration, the annual movement of wildebeest, zebra and gazelles across the wider Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Spectacular scenery, wildlife and cultural heritage combined. Its centrepiece, the Ngorongoro Crater, is a vast volcanic caldera with an exceptionally high concentration of wildlife, including lions, elephants, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest and black rhinos. The wider conservation area also includes Olduvai Gorge and important Maasai cultural landscapes.
Tarangire National Park
Known for large elephant herds and dramatic, ancient baobab trees. During the dry season, wildlife concentrates around the Tarangire River and remaining water sources, making the park especially rewarding for game viewing. It also supports diverse birdlife alongside buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and predators.
Lake Manyara National Park
A compact but genuinely diverse park, combining groundwater forest, woodland, open grassland, wetlands and the alkaline lake itself, home to elephants, buffalo, giraffes, hippos, baboons and abundant birdlife. Lake Manyara is also known for lions that are sometimes observed climbing trees, an unusual behaviour associated with the park. It fits naturally into a northern circuit itinerary alongside Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti.
Nyerere National Park
Formerly the Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere is one of Tanzania’s largest national parks, covering roughly 30,893 km². It’s known for large elephant, hippo, and crocodile populations; giraffes; wild dogs; and the Rufiji River and its wetlands. Boat safaris here offer a genuine alternative to conventional game drives.
Ruaha National Park
One of Tanzania’s major southern safari destinations, known for remote landscapes, large elephant populations, baobab- studded scenery and diverse wildlife. Before Nyerere’s 2019 creation, Ruaha was Tanzania’s largest national park. Its relative remoteness makes it well suited to travellers seeking a quieter safari away from the busier northern circuit.
Mikumi National Park
One of the most accessible safari destinations in southern Tanzania, particularly for travellers starting from Dar es Salaam. The Mkata River floodplain supports elephants, lions, buffalo, giraffes, zebras and wildebeest, and Mikumi combines easily with other southern Tanzania parks for a longer safari.
Gombe Stream National Park
One of Tanzania’s best-known destinations for chimpanzee trekking, closely associated with Jane Goodall’s pioneering research. The park protects forested landscapes along the shores of Lake Tanganyika, with guided forest walks offering the chance to see chimpanzees and other primates in the wild.
Tanzania Safari Extensions
Mount Kilimanjaro
Africa’s highest peak and Tanzania’s iconic high-altitude trekking destination. Climbers pass through several distinct ecological zones en route to Uhuru Peak, and Kilimanjaro combines naturally with a northern circuit safari through Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti.
Zanzibar
A popular beach and island extension, with a white-sand coastline, turquoise water and historic Stone Town. Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje and Jambiani rank among the island’s best-known beach areas.
Stone Town
Zanzibar’s historic urban centre and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for narrow streets, Swahili-Arab architecture and markets. Changuu Island (Prison Island) makes for an easy day trip from town.
Mafia Island
A quieter Indian Ocean destination built around diving, snorkelling, coral reefs and marine wildlife. Mafia Island Marine Park protects the surrounding coastal habitats, and seasonal whale shark encounters are one of the island’s signature draws.

Tanzania Safari Circuits
Northern Tanzania: Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara form the core of many northern Tanzania safari itineraries.
Southern Tanzania: Nyerere and Ruaha, there is another alternative safari with greater wilderness areas, more river-related activities, and less tourism traffic in many areas.
Western Tanzania: Gombe provides a specialist primate experience focused on chimpanzee trekking along Lake Tanganyika.
Safari and beach: A mainland safari can be combined with Zanzibar or Mafia Island for an Indian Ocean beach extension.
